Disclaimer: If you’re not a Peep Show fan then please ignore this photo ^ it’s not an accurate picture of life coaching… But if you are a Peep Show fan then this one’s for you. Don’t worry, I’m not about to therapise you.
Coaching has been around for donkey's years, every sports team has one, singers have vocal coaches, dancers have dance coaches. But it’s quite a new thing for people to have life coaches. It’s pretty big in America, unsurprisingly in California where people have diet coaches and probably coaches for their dog.
I totally appreciate it can seem a little woo-woo and hippy-esk, and the very thought of it can go against our reserved British nature.
I would have 100% had this viewpoint and immediately thought of Jez from Peep Show if I hadn’t grown up with a life coach in my family. I would be thinking why on earth would anyone pay a stranger to talk about their life? Surely you talk to friends and family about all that personal baggage stuff…
Sure, friends and family are a brilliant resource for dealing with any issues, and communication is so so important. But sometimes it can get a bit too close and personal can’t it? Maybe they can’t help but give their opinion, because they care about you and they want what they think is best for you.
Now I care about you too. That’s right, I do. But I don’t know you like they do, I don’t have any context on your life, which gives me a completely clean slate to talk to you objectively. I’ll steer the conversation in a way that keeps you on track and I'll ask the right questions to give you a different perspective.
I’m not here to give my opinion. In fact, I won't unless you ask me or give me permission to. I’m qualified to direct the conversation, listen carefully and act as your sounding board. A life coach is someone who is completely non-biased to what you say and every word is kept confidential. Everything we discuss is only with your best interest in mind. I have no motive other than to help you through whatever you’re dealing with, in the best possible way that makes you feel happy, confident and fulfilled.
Life coaching is not therapy.
While they’re similar in some respects, they are very different in others. A life coach is proactive and here to motivate and help you build the future you want, while a therapist looks back through past experiences and traumas in order to deal with them. We may still go over old memories and past experiences which are the cause of your personal values and beliefs, but we won’t dwell in this territory, our focus will be on moving forward.
If at any point I feel as though the conversation is getting into this grey area between counseling and coaching, I will steer the conversation away from it. I’m not a qualified therapist, I am however a qualified life coach, and with that in mind, I’m here to help you gain perspective, goals, and accountability in order for you to move forward and achieve your aims.
Coaching is like having a personal trainer for your mind
As a coach, I’m here to act as your confidant and your go-to girl when you’re stuck in a rut and need some clarity and guidance. If you’ve decided you want to quit your career and go for it as a business owner, I’m here to help you plan it all out. If you’ve had a horrible break up and are feeling lost, I’m here to help build you back up again. If you’ve got a new creative project you’re really passionate about but have no idea how to get it off the ground, I’m here to help you start. If you’re just feeling stuck in a rut but have no idea what you want to do, I’m here to help you figure it out.
You’re never trapped in a situation and I don't believe there's anything we can’t find an answer to. It’s having those answers that give us control back over our lives.
So, doesn’t coaching sound like the best thing ever?
